Poem: “Juneteenth at Last”
A sonnet I wrote three years ago upon the signing of the bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday.

President Biden got down on one knee
last week to acknowledge the relentless
activism of Opal Lee
before signing the bill passed by Congress
finally making Juneteenth a holiday.
After decades of marching and enlistment,
when few cared what she had to say,
the “grandmother” sat content
that obscure date on the calendar
most couldn't explain even if they noticed
was being engendered
by the forty-sixth POTUS.
Another step forward for a wayward nation.
One step closer toward reconcilaition.
