What an..shall we say, interesting, time to be alive in America.
We are simultaneously gripped with a 1918-type pandemic, a 1929-type economic collapse, and 1960s-type civil unrest.
I really do think George Floyd's murder at the hand of Minneapolis police officers was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. The protests that have erupted over the past two weeks are having real effects, and we may actually see some substantive police reform.
Hopefully.
Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck, is a metaphor for what white capitalism has done to African Americans in the country for four centuries.
The winds of change are blowing in all directions.
2020 is going to go down in the history books as a revolutionary year in America.
The question is, what kind of revolution will it be?
Will we embrace Jeffersonian Democracy, embrace Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and Second Bill of Rights?
Or fascism?
We are teetering on either one.
The "president" sanctioned tear gas be used against peaceful protesters so he could march across the street from the White House to a church for a photo op holding a Bible, and anonymous "law enforcement" vigilantes are helping their fuhrer squash protesters' First Amendment rights to peaceably assemble to redress their grievances.
Yes, we need to vote out this poor excuse for a leader, but...as Thom Hartmann proposed recently, fears of Trump refusing to leave the White House are moot when there is a constitutional way by which he could lose both the popular vote and the electoral college, and get re-elected.
It happened in 1876.
It could happen in 2020.
And if that happens, game over.
I am not being hyperbolic when I say if Trump gets another term, we will have full-on fascism in America.
